Information about the community reserve
Hellington and Rockland St Mary Community Reserve
The Reserve is 6.6 acres of land that straddles Hellington Beck and is located at the end of Low Common, Hellington. The land is leased from the Parochial Church Council.
The Reserve aims to improve the environment to create a range of biodiverse habitats for a diverse species of flora and fauna to flourish. And to educate visitors of all ages and to work together with neighbours and organisations.
The Reserve was constituted in 2014, has agreed policies, a bank account, has an Annual General Meeting and seeks funds to carry out the development and educational aspect of our aims and objectives. The Reserve has more than a hundred stakeholders who currently contribute twenty pounds per year. It is managed by a committee of eight stakeholders.
Our activities include many improvements to the site, creating pathways, planting hedgerows and trees, installing a bridge over the Beck, erecting bird and bat boxes and adding a compost toilet. We have introduced two wildlife ponds and maintained sluices to control water levels.
We have added information boards and have regular working parties to maintain the reserve. Picnics and events are held during the summer.
New members are always welcome. We have a Facebook site if you want to know more about the reserve, share photos, read our newsletter, or see the events and planned activities.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
